Common Cluster Segmentation Schemes

Lifecycle Stages
One of the typical approaches to deciding how to segregate clusters is based on having dedicated clusters for separate stages in your lifecycle, such as testing, beta, and production. This way, jobs that are not ready for production can run on their own dedicated cluster and do not interfere or compete with production jobs for resources or writing of data results. Having different clusters for separate stages also lets you test jobs on clusters that have newer versions of applications. This approach lets you test upgrades before upgrading your beta or production environments. To further isolate your workflows and scenarios, you can apply a separate instance role in Amazon EMR that disallows beta jobs to write their results to production S3 locations, protecting them from accidental deletions or modifications arising from your beta stage environment.
Workload Types
Interactive workloads: Clusters serving end users who submit ad-hoc queries require identity-aware security controls and interactive tooling. Use EMR Studio or SageMaker Unified Studio with IAM Identity Center integration for notebook-based interactive work. These clusters typically have peak usage during business hours.
Batch/ETL workloads: Clusters dedicated to batch processing tend to peak at different times. They benefit from:

Managed Scaling - EMR automatically adds/removes instances based on workload demand (replaces legacy custom auto-scaling policies)

Spot Instances with Instance Fleets for cost optimization

Scale-to-zero for task nodes during idle periods
Streaming workloads: Clusters running Apache Flink or Spark Structured Streaming against Amazon MSK or Kinesis Data Streams may warrant separate clusters due to their always-on nature and distinct resource profiles.

Time-Sensitive Jobs
Another common strategy for cluster segmentation is creating separate clusters based on whether their jobs are time-sensitive. When a repeated job's completion time must be consistent, creating and running the job on a separate cluster is a way to ensure that the job can obtain a predictable and consistent amount of resources each time that job must run. In addition, you can use more powerful and expensive hardware when running time-sensitive jobs.
Job Length
Separate long-running jobs from short-running jobs to prevent resource starvation:

Short-running jobs complete faster on dedicated clusters and are less likely to be affected by Spot Instance reclamation.

Long-running jobs can use Spot Instances more effectively with EMR Managed Scaling and Spot best-practice diversification across Instance Fleets.
Group/Organization Types
Some organizations create clusters per team or business unit. Few considerations :
